(Mikah preparing to grow Archaea.) This week we started a new unit study for science – Bacteria. We started by learning about the 3 domains of living organisms. (Bacteria, Archaea and Eukaraotes) This was all new information for me – so, I am learning right along with my 3rd grader! (I knew about the outdated system with 5 kingdoms. If you do any research you will find a maze of confusion in the way to classify living things. I talked to a graduate student in microbology and *think* I have a basic understanding.) Read more…

These are NOT for the faint of heart! They show real human dissetion. (i.e. real cadaver) It’s a great resource for the adventurous science student, however. There are a series of 29 videos ranging from 7-27 minutes long. They are from the Department of Anatomy, University of Wisconsin, Madison Medical School. Are you brave enough to check them out?

It’s amazing how much there is out there FREE for homeschooling the high school student! Tonight I found some more goodies I wanted to share.
As I have stated before, Tyler is studying Economics this year. Inside the Global Economy is a free series of 13 videos online at learner.com. This site is a teacher resource and professional development site by Annenberg Media. From the site “Annenberg Media’s multimedia resources help teachers increase their expertise in their fields and assist them in improving their teaching methods. Many programs are also intended for students in the classroom and viewers at home. All Annenberg Media videos exemplify excellent teaching.” They offer a second series of 28 videos in Economics called Economics U$A. Another related series tited Rural Communities: Legacy and Change explores why national and global economic trends effect rural communities. In the area of civics / government they offer a 15 video series called Democracy in America as well as a The Constitution: That Delicate Balance. The video series they have that’s titled Ethics in America and Ethics in America II aslo look very interesting and with some additional reading would complete an indepth course in civics / government. In fact, these videos are a great way to round out a curriculum or provide a basis for a unit study approach for families who are more eclectic in their homeschooling.

Recently, I made this data sheet so that Mikah could record the daily weather. The information it records can all be found easily online. So, if you can use this feel free to grab it!
WEATHER DATA SHEET

As I wrote in another post, we are using NOEO Biology I this year with Mikah. We are enjoying the curriculum. They start off the year teaching about weather because it effects the habitats of animals and plant life. It’s a little bit on the easy side for a 3rd grader who has had hands-on science since before she was old enough for pre-school. (That’s what happens when your brother who is older by 7 years loves science.) But since she is about on grade level with her reading we chose to wait for the Biology II and do it later. Anyhow, that’s why I made the data sheet. I needed to make the data collection a little more organized and harder for her. I also found a similar sheet (after I made mine!) that could be used with students from the Center of Atmospheric Research.

Classic Elementary Life Science
I almost wish I had found this before buying Mikah’s science curriculum for this upcoming year! It looks awesome. Best of all… it’s free! I downloaded my copy – don’t miss out! It’s not literature based – but its hands-on and inquiry based. If you are like me and like the “Living Science” C. Mason approach add a few living books and some notebooking pages you have a complete 36 weeks of science. I am going to try to incorporate some of it into what I am doing with Mikah. She loves science and we are doing life science (Noeo Biology I) this upcoming year – so, the timing is perfect!

These past few weeks I have been selecting the resources Tyler will be using for 9th grade. He is a visual and auditory learner and remembers everything he sees and hears. He is a great reader, but dislikes reading (I know… how can that be seeing he is my son?? LOL Lately I only have time for a few novels a week though…) So, I have been looking for a more project-based curriculum that will give him some choice. Read more…
